Rosetta Stone Can’t Find Internet Connection

I got to admit that it is fun to learn a new language using Rosetta Stone software, but it really isn’t much fun installing the software itself. With most softwares, I can install and get them running in one go, Rosetta Stone gave me much trouble.

First, I used the digital download method, and then tried to activate it. The error message is “We can’t find your Internet connection. It’s easiest to activate online, so we suggest that you try again after you make sure you’re connected to the Internet.” The weirdest thing is that it can upgrade the language pack by itself, but it says “no Internet connection”?! WTF!

So I cannot activate it, maybe I can still load the lesson?! Now the error message is “We’re unable to communicate with the server right now. Please try again later.” According to the website help, I could try uninstalling the language packs and try again. It’s a bit annoying since it took time to uninstall the language packs and download everything again. Still no luck, I received the same error messages, I could not activate or load the lessons.

I searched for solutions on the net, the usual suggestion is that – change firewall setting, edit Internet settings, etc etc. I followed everything the help file suggested, and even turned off my firewall for a short period of time. Nah, it didn’t work.

My last solution was to uninstall everything and use the backup CDs. Now this time I could load the lessons fine, but I still needed to finish the activation or the lessons 3-5 would remain locked. Now the only way to do it is to use phone activation. The phone support was pretty helpful, I keyed in the given response code, and my language packs are now fully activated. And for some reasons Rosetta Stone can find Internet connection now, I can register online finally.
