My previous domain name registrar Uniregistry was acquired by GoDaddy some time ago. Uniregistry was really great; I particularly like its interface, it’s clean and simple, and everything makes sense.

Everything seemed to work fine after the switch of service. The domains’ transfer was smooth, and I didn’t notice any problem until domain renewal. There appeared to be a slight problem with billing. I received a domain renewal notification email, but the system was unable to renew the domain. The terrible part was that I had not received any “payment declined” or “unable to renew” sort of email.

One day, I just happened to sign in and noticed that one domain name was expired. Was there something wrong with the Paypal auto payment? I tried to edit the payment method and check what was on record — not working. I tried to add a new payment method; the “Save” button was “grey out”. I contacted online support, but I was told to wait 40 minutes. During that time of waiting, I finally figured out a way to renew my domain. I put that domain name on the shopping cart, and then I could pay and continue.

I suppose that when the system cannot renew a domain name, it should send out a warning email. And, when a certain button is “grey out”, the system should hint at what really goes wrong. Next time, should I renew my domain manually in advance? Or should I wait and see if it can auto-renew? Probably, they have already fixed the problem; I’ll let you know next time.
